We are proud to present in partnership with the 32th Vancouver International Film Festival the film Nosotros los Nobles, the biggest box office in the history of Mexican Cinema. Showtimes Sep 29 09:00 pm, Centre for Performing Arts
Synopsis
The gulf between the fabulously wealthy and the rest of us proves ripe for comic exploitation in this uproarious farce, Mexico’s biggest ever box-office hit (it doubled the previous record take).
The directorial debut of USC film school graduate Gary “Gaz” Alazraki, We Are the Nobles has a premise almost everyone can relate to. After devoting his life to a wildly successful career in construction, self-made millionaire and widower German finally pauses to take stock of his three 20-something kids—and realizes how wretchedly spoiled they are. To teach them a lesson in humility he concocts an elaborate scam, convincing them that he’s lost everything after auditors have stumbled on incriminating anomalies in the accounts. Hiding out in a rat-infested hovel, their credit cards revoked, the kids are going to have to buckle down and earn a living for the first time in their young lives.
Influenced by Luis Buñuel’s 1949 Mexican screwball comedy El gran calavera, but loaded with topical references to today’s millennial party kids—a breed much the same no matter where you are in the world—We Are the Nobles is a slick, stylish and very funny comeuppance comedy. A sequel is already in the works, and don’t be surprised if you see a Hollywood remake down the pike.
