Anna Castillo (also in That Was Life this week) is dazzling in this powerful drama about the struggles of a young mother to transcend her testing circumstances. Julia is 22, with two kids, an estranged partner in the army and out of the picture (for now at least), little in the way of an education, and hanging onto the dream of becoming a nurse. She falls in love with Oscar (Oriol Pla), but we can see, even if Julia cannot, he’s hardly ideal father material…

Jaime Rosales structures the film around three different men in Julia’s life, but the focus falls squarely on the resilient young woman. This is a character piece, piercingly authentic and sometimes bruising, but ultimately empowering.

Opening Night (January 5) includes live flamenco, a glass of wine, tapas and Serrano ham

A remarkable attention to emotional truthfulness, embodied primarily in a captivating, sometimes wrenching, and always relatable central performance by Ana Castillo… Wonderfully written… Wild Flowers has much to say… [it’s] a moving journey, too.
